About The Cass Valley & Access

Located in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand’s South Island, the Cass Valley is an alpine river valley situated to the northwest of Lake Tekapo. Glenmore Station, an expansive sheep and cattle station, stretches from the shores of Lake Tekapo and enhances the natural splendor of this region. This spectacular locale is nestled in the Hall Range, just below Rankin Pass, and is nourished by the nearby Huxley Glacier.

As you journey through the Cass Valley, you’ll pass near the Glenmore homestead, following the winding path of the braided Cass river. Continuing on the right side of the river, you’ll encounter a popular ski trail, known as “The Scorpion,” which becomes a well-known ski tour loop during the appropriate season.

Notably, the Cass River derives its name from Thomas Cass, who served as the Chief Surveyor of Canterbury Province from 1851 to 1867.
